Matt’s passion for fishing, and fly-fishing specifically, started at a young age like so many of us here at Pacific Angler. As his skills as a fly fisherman progressed it did not go un-noticed and soon Matt was representing Canada on the Canadian Youth Fly Fishing Team. This did also not go un-noticed by the local fishing shops as Matt worked at Hub Sports as well as Ruddick’s Fly Shop.
His adventure in guiding took off at Pine Point Resort, where he spent four years fishing the pristine lakes of the Chilcotin region. Armed with a floatplane and a love for the wild, Matt perfected the art of stalking huge trout and chasing aggressive rainbows on remote alpine streams.
Next stop? The legendary Bulkley River, where Matt learned from the best—Spey fishing pioneers Mike and Denise Maxwell. With his competitive casting background, Matt became a Spey casting pro and spent over a decade guiding steelhead fanatics on this iconic river.
After years of guiding in the north, Matt made his way to Pacific Angler, where his love for teaching and his easygoing nature made him a quick favourite with both customers and clients. As our retail manager, he’s been behind many of our popular courses, like the Introduction to Fly Fishing and Steelhead Fly Fishing classes. He also leads our annual warm water trips to Cuba and Christmas Island, where he's caught numerous bonefish, permit, and tarpon—and even achieved the elusive Grand Slam.
When Matt’s not at the shop, you’ll find him hunting for new warm water destinations, tying flies for everything from steelhead to tarpon, or fishing the Squamish, Skagit, and Upper Pitt rivers or filming the latest Pacific Angler TV episode.
